When did you first fall in love with pottery?

I had enrolled in a high school pottery course back in Grade 11 and I instantly fell in love! I still have some of my pieces from then. That was 1998!

How has working with clay made a difference in your life?

Working with clay again after so many years has been really therapeutic–being in touch with earth, quite literally, is grounding for me. I love using my hands to create my artwork. It’s organic, natural and connects us to our humanity. Why? Pottery has been one of the earliest functional art forms passed down from civilizations. That’s remarkable!

Do you have a favorite piece you’ve made so far and what is the story behind it?

I had made a set of Van Gogh-inspired mugs using the sgraffito technique. I appreciate his artistic journey. And, although it ended tragically, it reminds me of how messy and beautiful life can be…all at once. I sold one of these special mugs and kept one for myself as a memory.

Favorite tool?

I recently gifted myself a DiamondCore Carving Tool for sgraffito work, to make the grooves and create negative space on my clay surfaces. The sgraffito technique really appeals to me and my style of artwork.

Favorite clay?

So far, I love the deep hue and texture of the red clay. The contrast of vibrant underglazes over the clay is stunning. I can’t wait to try black clay!

Best local spot?

I enjoy hanging out at cafes and having some coffee over great conversations with friends. Windsor is full of unique independently owned coffee shops. There’s a strong tie between Taloola Cafe, Cafe Amor and Troya Turkish Grocery & Bakery. I can’t pick just one!

What do you like to listen to when you work?

Recently, I’ve started listening to podcasts while I work at the studio. It’s a great way to learn something new while I’m working with clay. My current podcast playlist includes ‘Diary of a CEO by Steve Bartlett’, ‘Feel Better, Live More with Dr Rangan Chatterjee’ and ‘The Mel Robbins Podcast’.

What is your next pottery goal, or skill you’re most keen to learn?

I would like to spend time acquiring handbuilding skills. I’ve done a lot of wheel-throwing; It’s time to shake things up. I appreciate the freeform structure and possibilities of handbuilding to further my creative explorations and journey :).

Sobia's other passion: The Olive Tree Soap Company

What is the best part of being a member of a pottery studio?

I really appreciate the community energy at Ford City Potters. Everyone is so helpful and warm. It’s evident that Lisa and Gisele have put a lot of intentionality and care behind their studio space. I can feel a sudden creative shift inside as soon as I walk down the stairs. It’s my favourite place to be, no doubt!
